Mercedes has opened its app store for customers in Europe driving cars fitted with “Comand.” Though the app store turned a tech head or two when it was previewed earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show, there is still a lot of work to be done before it is ready for the U.S. market.
At this early stage, the app store has but two apps available for sale. One is functional helping to find open parking spots. The second is interesting and possibly rather dangerous. It is a news app that shows full text when the car is not moving and headlines when it is.
For vehicle systems to have any real use, they need to be integrated with the driver’s smart phone, which the app store is not. Until that happens and its app inventory is beefed up, there is no reason for anyone stateside to give Mercedes new app store nary a thought.
